What is psychological therapy or psychotherapy?

Psychological therapy refers to a wide range of approaches and practices that focus on mental health issues, such as anxiety disorders, mood disorders, addictions, eating disorders, and personality disorders. It can also effectively address challenges like interpersonal conflicts, stress management, coping with life transitions, recovery from abuse, and sleep issues. For some, psychotherapy proves as effective as medication, or even more so in certain cases. However, depending on individual needs, psychotherapy may sometimes need to be combined with other treatments.

Who provides psychological therapy?

Psychological therapy can be delivered by various mental health professionals, each with unique expertise and approaches. At our clinic, you may work with a counselling psychologist, clinical psychologist, or psychological counsellor. Each of these practitioners specializes in different therapeutic techniques tailored to support diverse mental health needs.

What is psychotherapy?

Psychotherapy is a term that covers different talk therapy methods designed to explore how thoughts and emotions influence behavior. The goal of psychotherapy is to promote lasting change rather than simply managing symptoms.

Several types of psychotherapy are effective across many mental health conditions, including:

Cognitive behavioral therapy (cbt)

CBT is a structured talk therapy that focuses on reshaping thought and behavior patterns. It emphasizes the connection between thoughts, emotions, and actions, helping individuals break out of negative cycles. CBT is highly effective for depression, low self-esteem, and anxiety disorders such as generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), social anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), among others.

Psychodynamic therapy

Psychodynamic therapy, or psychoanalytic therapy, explores deep-seated mental and emotional patterns, connecting life experiences and past coping mechanisms with present challenges. This approach is particularly suited for complex mental health issues rooted in the subconscious and is often a longer-term commitment. It can be highly effective for interpersonal conflicts, issues with intimacy, and individuals seeking in-depth personal insight.

Integrative psychotherapy

Integrative therapy combines evidence-based techniques tailored to individual needs. This approach recognizes that a single therapeutic model may not suit every individual, so integrative therapists adapt their methods to address unique personality traits, mental capacity, and motivation.

Additional therapeutic options

In addition to the above, emerging cognitive-behavioral therapies provide further tools in psychotherapy, including:

  • Mindfulness Therapy: This approach emphasizes present-moment awareness and is helpful in managing anxiety and depression. Mindfulness can improve well-being by fostering a conscious connection with thoughts and emotions.

  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT): ACT uses mindfulness principles to help individuals accept negative thoughts and feelings, encouraging them to commit to actions that promote well-being.

  • Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT): Originally developed for borderline personality disorder, DBT has shown effectiveness for conditions such as bulimia, bipolar disorder, PTSD, and substance abuse. It combines individual and group therapy to teach skills for emotional regulation, stress tolerance, and interpersonal communication.

  • Compassion-Focused Therapy (CFT): This therapy draws on cognitive-behavioral methods, neuroscience, and elements of mindfulness to promote self-compassion and address issues such as anxiety, shame, and depression.

  • Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR): Effective for PTSD, EMDR allows individuals to process traumatic memories in a safe, controlled environment, supporting natural healing.
